First opened in 1894, Blackpool tower is a 158m high steel structure. Blackpool Tower was modelled on the Eiffel tower, however one of the main differences is that the Eiffel Tower is a free-standing structure and Blackpool Tower is not. This fact presents a large obstacle for anyone who wishes to climb Blackpool Tower without the owners permission, as tower climbers “Userscott” and “Stepping Lightly” know only too well. At the foot of Blackpool Tower is a building of about 6 stories that houses which hides the base of the tower.

It’s about our hundredth attempt at possibly one of the hardest ‘buildering‘ challenges in the UK that leads us to the base of the tower. For two years the challenge wasn’t even the tower – it was getting to the base of the tower

11th of December is International Mountain Day

For most people who go walking, trekking, climbing and mountaineering the mountains are a place to have fun and challenge yourself. For many people however, the mountains are their home, providing their livelihood and are their way of life. In order to improve the welfare of the indigenous peoples of mountainous regions the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (UN) has initiated an annual International Mountain Day. Since the first International Mountain Day in 2003, December 11th is used to highlight important issues that affect the mountain environment and those people who live there.

How does The Salford City Reds Rugby League Team and my mum show the usefulness of one of the camping industries unsung heroes? Confused? Then read on…

We spend a lot of time in this industry, and in life lauding the most prominent, products and people. When Cheryl Cole wore a Berghaus Cascade GTX hat for Comic Relief, everyone wanted one. Thermarest released the NeoAir range in a blaze of industry publicity and demand outstriped supply. We demand innovation, new technology, cutting edge features and too often we all forget the unsung non-glamorous products and just take them for granted.

Bicycle Touring is an exciting, healthy way to spend your free time, either on your own, with friends or even your family! In my previous article An Introduction to Bicyle Touring the main forms of touring were defined. For most Cycle Tours the gear needed will essentially the same, although it will depend upon how much each individual cyclist is prepared to carry, what they view as essential items, what level of comfort is required, what terrain and distance the tour will cover and whether there are any support vehicles to carry equipment.
