The Decagon Jacket is a hooded, waterproof jacket. Whilst it is primarily aimed at the skiing and snow boarding market, the Decagon is highly suitable for general outdoor wear too. It has a fashionable urban design and would look great on the street as well as on the slopes! Made from fully seam sealed HyVent 2 fabric, it is waterproof and breathable. As you would expect from The North Face, the Decagon has an array of features that make it both practical and comfortable.
The Decagon is a relatively heavy jacket, when you put it on it feels more substantial than other waterproof jackets. This is certainly beneficial for use when skiing or snowboarding, especially for those of use who end up falling over in the snow!
Breathable, Waterproof Fabric
The fabric is The North Face’s HyVent Proweave 2 layer waterproof, breathable fabric. The seams are sealed preventing water from getting in through the seams. The Decagon also has a layer of 80g Heatseeker Eco insulation, providing a small amount of insulation, although if the weather is cold you will need to wear warm mid- and base-layers too. If you do get a bit hot, there are pit zips which can provide a bit of ventilation.
The hood can be adjusted and pulled tight around your face with drawstrings at the front and back of the hood. Strangely, on the men’s jacket, the toggles for the drawcord are located at the bottom of the neck as opposed to higher up on the hood where you would expect them. This does have the benefit of them not flapping around and hitting you in the face!
One of the most noticeable set of features are the numerous pockets. These include three internal pockets, two of which are specifically designed for your ski goggles and phone or media player. On the outside of the jacket are two flap pockets on the chest and two zippered hand warmer pockets. Finally there is another flap pocket on the upper left arm.
Ski Jacket Features
Features of the Decagon that are particular to ski jackets include the “Snap-away powder skirt with elastic gripper” and “Pant-a-locks”. The elasticated skirt stops snow from getting inside whilst the locks system enables your jacket and waterproof trousers to be attached together. Another feature is called the “Buddy lift clip” which is a handy clip where you can attach your ski-lift swipe card.
Ideal for snow sports!
Other noticeable features are the adjustable hem system and hook-and-loop (velcro) cuffs which help to keep the heat inside the jacket.
If you go walking occasionally the Decagon jacket will be able to protect you from the rain. However, if you go hiking or walking regularly, the Decagon is not really the best option. We would recommend hiking specific waterproof jackets such as the Jack Wolskin Black Range or The North Face All Terrain Jacket.
Decagon Jacket Review Summary
The North Face Decagon jacket is quality breathable waterproof designed for skiing, snowboarding and general use. Whilst it would suit the occasionally walker, it is not really the best option for dedicated hikers. Made from Hyvent fabric with Eco insulation it will keep you dry and provides some thermal insulation too. With practical features such a multiple pockets, pit-zips and powder skirt, it is a well thought out piece of clothing for adventures on the slopes. The stylish urban design also makes it suitable for rainy days around town.
