Paul running in the Ultra

Running the Long Good Friday Ultra

“Any idiot can run a marathon but it takes a special idiot to run an ultra” were the words printed on the back of the training top on the athlete in front of me.

We were doing yet another uphill section on a 1 mile loop that made up part of the course for the ‘Long Good Friday Ultra’ 6 hour ultra running race and any remaining competitors were already 4.5 weary hours into the event.

To help launch our new running section, which is the place to find all of your running gear, check out my video feature review of Salomon’s excellent Fast Wing Hoodie.

Salomon Fast Wing Hoodie

This lightweight windproof jacket which has been designed for runners as both a training or race jacket. Looking at the Fast Wing you may be forgiven for thinking that it is like many other lightweight windshirts but when you scratch below the surface and look at the features you come to appreciate that attention to detail Salomon have gone to in their design.

Update: Please note that the Power Tokee has been discontinued. As an alternative we recommend the Nordisk Telemark 1 LW instead.

This week’s Product of the Week (09/07/12) is the Vaude Power Tokee Ultralight 2012 Tent. A tent we’ve chosen as a star product, it’s a favourite amongst our customers and one of our best selling tents. The Power Tokee is a 1 person ultralight tent, which at only 860 g packed is currently the lightest tent in our selection. In our review we take a look at its features and find out why it is one of our best selling tents.

The Sony Walkman allowed people to listen to music whilst they were doing outdoor sports.

Sony Walkmans were massive! Source: Flickr by daryl_mitchell

Ever since the invention of the Sony Walkman outdoor enthusiasts have been able to take their music with them on their adventures. Back in the good old days it meant lots of extra weight, there was not an ultralight option! If you moved abruptly the cassette anti-rolling mechanism couldn’t cope and your tunes would speed up or slow down. Not to mention that if you wanted more than 90 minutes of music you needed to carry a collection of cassettes. Now with ipods and smart phones the technical issues have long been resolved and you can take more music than you can shake your walking pole at for around 100 grams.

Motivational Music
for Mountain Climbing

Having your music with you when you are walking, running or climbing is great for motivation and can keep you going when pain and/or boredom sets in. Maybe you dance along to the beat or at least run in time to it!

According to the Federation for Sport at Altitude (FSA) , skyrunning is

Running from the sea to the sky, from the plains to the earth’s highest peaks.

Outdoor sports such as running, biking, skiing, duathlons, triathlons which are undertaken at altitudes above 2000 m are collectively known as Skysports. Typical locations for Skysports are The Alps, Tibet, Nepal, Kenya, Colorado, Mexico or

anywhere that the sky and mountains meet.

And there was me thinking that Skysports was about watching football, rugby or cricket on a widescreen LCD TV at home or down the pub.

Andrew Skurka

Adventure racing is becoming increasingly popular in the UK. The Adidas Terrex Adventure Race will be a 4 day non-stop event held in the Lake District. The race will follow a 400 km linear course across Cumbria, with shortcuts available for novice teams.

Good navigation is essential for the race, and you will be provided with detailed maps to follow. The race will include fell running, mountain biking, kayaking, orienteering and a few surprises taking you to those hidden gems. Attitude is everything, so be prepared for the unexpected!

Since this Adventure Race is being held in the Lake District there could well be some open water swimming.
