- Backpack: as well as your main backpack get a daypack too. How much storage space do you need? Do you need a lightweight backpack or heavy duty expediton bag? Waterproof, compact, side pockets, secret compartments, two-way access, walking pole holders...? Do you need a rucksack liner for excellent waterproofing or for simply helping you organise your backpack better?
1. Footwear: walking boots are always appreciated, but what about comfortable and hard wearing sandals and trail running shoes?
2. Travel Clothes: cargo shorts, cotton or baselayer t-shirts and underwear, mountain trousers, fleece jacket, waterproof jacket, waterproof trousers, insulated jacket, walking socks, fabric care and waterproof sprays, hats, gloves and scarves.
3. Sleeping Bag: does it need to be a lightweight down sleeping bag for high warmth to weight ratio, or maybe a sleeping bag liner would be adequate for warmer climates.
4. Travel Accessories and Equipment: lightweight travel towel, torch / head-torch, maps, compass, water bottle / hydration pack, MP3 player, book and guide book, camera and batteries.
5. Camping Equipment: tent, tent repair, mini lightweight camping stove, fuel, matches, pans, utensils, ready meals, pen knife, cutlery, roll mat and compressible pillow.
6. Walking, Mountaineering and Climbing: walking poles, pedometer, mountain, whistle, GPS, axes, crampons, gaitors, climbing ropes, climbing harness, helmet, ascenders, belays, descenders, quickdraws, karabiners, passive protection, slings, chalk bag, chalk, nut key and a pen knife.
7. Travel Health and Safety: mosquito net, water purifciation tablets, insect repellant, matches and sunglasses (and a case).
8. Travel Documents: passport, tickets, 6 spare passport photos, medical advice and vaccinations, photocopies of your passport and birth certificate, driving license, student card, additional I.D., currency, emergency and contact telephone numbers, travellers cheques / credit card and Visas.
9. Memories: make sure you leave space for the odd photo of your family or friends to remind you to come back! You might also want to leave a bit of space for souvenirs to carry with you, or until you get to a post office to post them back.
10. Luxury item: if you're going away for a long-time, and you still have space, maybe think about taking one luxury item - this doesn't mean taking a gold bullion, but anything more that you think that maybe you shouldn't but really you should. If you disagree with this list, and want to go a bit more minimal check out the lightweight backpacking advice section, or take the lightweight quiz to see whether you really are a lightweight!
* This is simply a guide to contribute to your preparations, you will probably need to add alot more personal items and do plenty more research but feel free to contact us about further camping or outdoor equipment advice or alternatively visit the equipment advice section.
